Issue date: 07/11/2012

screenshots of BAAF's new iPad and iPhone appThe British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF) has today unveiled an adoption & fostering mobile phone app to help find adoptive and foster families for children who need them.

The app – designed and built by Bell Pottinger Digital – is the first of its kind and is aimed at members of the public who may be considering extending their family through adoption or fostering.

Using the phone’s GPS, the app allows prospective adopters and foster carers to search for their nearest local authority, voluntary adoption agency, or independent foster care provider – using BAAF’s comprehensive database to show the user where to go to get more information about adoption and fostering.

David Holmes, Chief Executive at BAAF, said of the app: “The spotlight on adoption and fostering this year has highlighted the desperate shortage of adoptive families – and indeed foster carers too. By launching this mobile app, BAAF is able to reach a whole new arena of prospective adopters and foster carers in a new and exciting way.

“This innovative tool will allow the user to find out more about adoption and fostering immediately and wherever they are – all on the privacy of their own mobile device.”

Children’s Minister Edward Timpson added: “Those who want to adopt need information about what help is available in their areas. Innovative services like this are very encouraging. I hope it helps more people come forward for training so that they can then adopt children.”

Users will also be able to find a wealth of information including 10 Steps to Adoption, specifics on who can foster and adopt, and real-life stories and videos from members of the adoption and fostering community, which will pull in live from BAAF’s social media channels.

The app has been formatted for iPad, iPhone and Android users and is available to download free from the Apple and Android app stores to coincide with National Adoption Week (5-11 November). Find out more about the app at the iTunes store. And find out more from the Google Play Store.
