Evidence Review: The impacts of abuse and neglect on children; and comparisons of different placement options
There can be no more important decision than when local authorities and the courts decide on a child in care’s future. These are life changing decisions. They are a number of key features in this - the needs and circumstances of the child and their family, the legal framework and the skills and knowledge of those professionals who make those decisions and implement them. Throughout all of this, the evidence from research must play a key part in evaluating the needs of the child, the issues in the family and the immediate and long term consequences for the child.
This government commissioned document from Research in Practice is a detailed overview of that evidence. Confidence in the working of the courts and local authorities and the decisions they make need to be firmly rooted in that evidence. That is no simple task but this new resource must be read, discussed and implemented for the contribution it can make to those decisions. Children deserve no less.
