Permanence into the future – do we know where we are going?
*** NOTE: THIS EVENT IS TO BE RESCHEDULED. A NEW DATE WILL BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY ***
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, CoramBAAF will launch a series of webinars, the first of which focuses on the concept of permanence, its understanding across social care and its role in future policy and practice. It is a FREE event available to members only.
The concept of permanence is central to CoramBAAF’s values, and is well established in family placement policy and practice, but may be less well understood across social care. It marks out what all children expect and need throughout their childhood, adolescence and then into adulthood. However, for many children their lives are clouded with degrees of uncertainty from a wider range of challenges from parental dispute and other family crisis, to health issues or unexpected tragedy.
Where children have been abused or neglected and when the local authority and the court decides to make a legal order that terminates or restricts the role of the parent/s, permanence becomes a key issue that must be addressed. Adoption is often seen as the core solution, but special guardianship has become prominent over the last few years. Fostering has an uneasy connection to permanence in the way that it works out for each individual child and their specific circumstances.
This webinar will explore the key issues that inform our understanding of permanence and its role in future policy and practice. This includes an exploration of the basics of child and adolescent development, the challenges of adoption, special guardianship and foster care and the key factors for a coherent framework into the future.
