Kinship Conference on 14 October 2024 at Mary Ward House in London – hosted by CoramBAAF
As ongoing reforms put greater emphasis on kinship care join us for a day of contemporary insights from researchers, senior leaders, carers and professionals in the children and families sector.
The day will create a supportive and collaborative learning experience to empower social work practitioners. Attendees will leave with knowledge, practical tools, and new connections to enhance their work with children in kinship care and their families.

Morning session
Presentations and panel discussion
Key stakeholders from across kinship care will share their unique perspective and experiences, offering valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of the current reform agenda. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the latest research findings, policy developments, and practical approaches to kinship care.
Afternoon session
Workshops, panel Q & A and closing thoughts
Afternoon workshops will continue to meet the specific needs and interests of social work practitioners in kinship care. These smaller group sessions will allow for more focused discussions, hands-on learning, and the development of actionable tools for professional practice.
WORKSHOPS
All four workshops will run before lunch and repeat after lunch. Attendees will have a choice to attend two of the four workshops. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
Workshop 1
How to listen to children to improve practice and inform service delivery of kinship services | Dr Paul Shuttleworth, Kingston University and University of Sussex
This workshop focuses on what practitioners can do to listen to children living in kinship families. Drawing on his thesis, “What matters to children living in kinship care”, Paul asks us to Listen, Understand, Do in our direct work with children. Relevant not only for children living in kinship families but in all social work practice, there will be opportunity to discuss effective methods of hearing children’s voices in often complex kinship living arrangements.
Workshop 2
How to involve kinship carers in design and delivery of kinship services | Johanna Bernard and Sharon McPherson, Families in Harmony
This workshop focuses on what local authorities can do to ensure kinship carers are consulted and involved. As kinships carers, founders and co-directors of Families in Harmony, Johanna and Sharon will share their expertise about what works well when working towards a model of co-production. Using examples from their work with local authorities and across the kinship sector, they will reflect on lessons learnt.
Workshop 3
How to make best use of the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund to support kinship families | Emma Bird, and Louise Burt, Mott McDonald with Clare Seth, CoramBAAF
This workshop focuses on what practitioners can do to maximise the funding available and compliment good social work practice. There will be an opportunity to discuss the scope and eligibility criteria, ASGSF administration requirements and examples of effective practice. Clare Seth, Kinship Consultant, CoramBAAF will run this session alongside Emma Bird and Louise Burt of Mott McDonald.
Workshop 4
How to review the design and structure of local authority kinship services | Mike Hall, Independent Consultant and Ann Horne, CoramBAAF
This workshop focuses on the key steps needed when thinking about the systems and structures that often underpin the delivery of services. Drawing on Mike’s work with local authorities and Ann’s experiences as a local authority manager, they will reflect on some of the barriers to change and what can make a difference.
