CoramBAAF Open Course

Sibling Assessments: Beyond, together or apart

THEME

This open course will offer a comprehensive approach to undertaking sibling assessments. It will explore who the key contributors to sibling assessments are and how assessors can plan assessments and engage these contributors in the process. Most importantly it will explore how to gain the views of the children, observe sibling interactions and draw conclusions on the quality of sibling relationships as well as focusing on the individual needs of each child and of the sibling group.

On open courses we can accommodate a maximum of four delegates from one organisation only. For a larger group booking, please see the information on commissioned training.

For social workers, reflection on this session may contribute to your continuing professional development (CPD).

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • To consider sibling relationships and the impact of sibling separation, in the context of the individual needs of each child, contact, permanency planning and family relationships.
  • To develop confidence and equip practitioners with the key knowledge and skills to assess siblings and present robust, evidence-based and child-focused recommendations.
  • To familiarise workers with the CoramBAAF SAR report and the model of assessment set out in Beyond Together or Apart.

Author: Shelagh Beckett (2021)Book - Beyond Together Apart (2021)

Brothers and sisters have potentially the longest lasting and one of the closest relationships of their lives with each other – connections that have enormous capacity for shared understanding and warmth, and which are expected to last. But looked after children needing permanence – and approximately 60 per cent of looked after children have siblings – are faced with the real possibility that these connections will be weakened or even severed if they are placed separately.

CoramBAAF members can also watch the introductory event to the Siblings Assessment Report (SAR) which explains the model of sibling assessment that was developed and outlined in the book.
