Robust Analysis and Evidence Based Connected Persons & Special Guardianship Assessments
THEME
This open course will be an opportunity to explore personal and professional values and thresholds in respect of assessing connected persons, including tools to assist in assessing the child’s and the Connected Persons’ continued relationship with the birth parents and any possible risks posed to the child and carer and how these can be managed.
It will also include looking at good practice in special guardianship orders as a permanency option and identify current dilemmas in the assessment of family and connected persons and the importance of identifying strengths and risks, including those related to safeguarding.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the day participants will have:
- Explored personal and professional values and thresholds in respect of assessing connected persons
- Considered tools to assist in assessing the child’s and the Connected Persons’ continued relationship with the birth parents and any possible risks posed to the child and carer and how these can be managed
- Any support required by the carers to provide good care to the child in the short or long term
- Identified current dilemmas & good practice in the assessment process and reviews of connected persons

Joan has provided Training and consultancy for a range of Independent Agencies and Local Authorities and within this capacity facilitated training on a number of Child Care/ Fostering /Adoption focused subjects to Professionals, family members, Foster Carers and adoptive parents. These have covered a diverse range of subjects; Separation and Loss, Attachments, Secure Base; Therapeutic Re-parenting, Behaviour Management, Life Story, Managing food issues, Assessing Sibling Groups, Parenting Teens, Parenting Siblings, Direct Work with Children, Panel Training, Cultural Diversity, Internet Safety , Supervising Social Workers, Fostering Reviews, Disruption Training, Child Development, Caring for Children who have been Sexually Abused, Supporting children in Education, and Parent and Child Arrangements. Joan also undertaken consultancy work including Chairing Disruptions, Life Story Literature Review, and Parent 2 Parent Peer mentoring.

Family placement social workers and workers involved in the assessment and approval of foster carers.
