James Bury reflects on his visit to number 10 Downing Street. He attended a reception, along with Emma Fincham and our Foster Carers Advisory Committee, to celebrate the work of foster carers from across the country.
Foster carers are increasingly being asked to care for a parent and their child during care proceedings, and to contribute towards the assessment of parenting capacity. This type of arrangement is complex, involving different tasks and responsibilities.
The responsibilities of a Chair can be considerable. Whereas some duties may be clearly outlined in related practice guidance along with the qualities that ensure effective chairing, not all Chair responsibilities are so helpfully detailed or provided. This workshop will explore general planning for and facilitation of panels and complex meetings in the children’s sector. It will explore time management and group facilitation whilst holding the child at the centre of thinking, recommendations and decision making. It will enable Chairs of meetings to consider good practice and approaches to effectively managing the flow of information, summarising and the formation of key action plans.
Panel Chair
Barnardo’s is seeking to recruit an Independent Panel Chair for its joint Adoption and Fostering South East and London panel. The panel hears adoption, fostering and early permanency assessments as well as foster care reviews and on occasion an emergency case may be added to panel business. We welcome applications from prospective adopters and foster carers from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities and recognise their potential and unique worth. Prospective adopters and foster carers will need to feel welcomed, listened to with a clear promotion of reasonable and responsible decision making from panel and chair.

This Practice Note considers the National Minimum Standards (NMS) within the context of kinship foster care and how this differs from mainstream foster care. It provides practitioners and panel members with reflections about the interpretation of NMS for kinship foster carers, alongside practice points to ensure that they are supported to meet the NMS within the caring relationship they have for a specific child/ren.

This session is an introduction to aspects of neurodiversity including autism, dyslexia and ADHD. It will give an overview to increase participants' knowledge and develop confidence in the subject.
