An introduction to private fostering

THEME

This course is an opportunity to explore the legal and practice framework of private fostering, including thinking about how to identify and work with this often unseen group of children. It will include explanation of the respective responsibilities of parents, private foster carers and local authorities, when private fostering arrangements are made. Since the war in Ukraine, some Ukrainian children who have travelled to the UK for safety, are living in private fostering arrangements, and this introductory course will also briefly explore their needs. 

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Explore the definition of private fostering and its legal framework
  • Consider how to identify children in private fostering arrangements and understood their needs
  • Learn about the respective responsibilities of parents, private foster carers and local authorities
  • Understand key referral and assessment processes for private fostering 
  • Briefly explore practice advice around Ukrainian children not living with a parent or legal guardian

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Children’s social workers and managers in front line teams, such as those receiving referrals about children, and those working with children in need or where there are safeguarding concerns. Social workers and managers working in private fostering who need a briefer introduction to this area of practice. There is a 1 day course for practitioners and managers involved in assessing private fostering arrangements and supporting the children and private foster carers. Please click here to view
