Learning from Research: Developments in attachment research
Attachment theory is a staple of practice. However, the version of the theory in circulation is quite outdated. Not only does attachment theory today look very different to the paradigm initially introduced by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth. More than this, with the accumulation of evidence over time, there have been some major revolutions since the 1990s. This webinar by Professor Robbie Duschinsky will discuss the fundamental changes that have occurred since the 1990s. This includes shifts in how researchers conceptualise attachment, its implications, and how best to study the phenomenon. The webinar will survey new discoveries in this period, with a focus on consensus findings rather than isolated studies, before then considering the implications of these developments for practice with children and families.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
- Recognise that widely-known early studies of attachment had quite different findings to the subsequent results of later research
- Understand the role of contextual factors, such as poverty, as potential influences on attachment relationships
- Identify the strengths and limitations of current dependable knowledge about attachment relationships
