Making good use of the ASGSF to support kinship families

The Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund has been available to children living with special guardians since 2016, and its name was changed in 2023 with the publication of the National Kinship Care Strategy. Although the number of applications made on behalf of children living with special guardians is slowly increasing, the number of applications is still considerably lower than those made for adopted children.

This 1 day course is aimed at practitioners working with kinship families to equip you with the knowledge and skills to confidently assess a kinship family’s support needs, match to a therapeutic intervention, and understand the scope, eligibility and requirements of the ASGSF in order to make applications to the fund.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the open course participants will have:

Explored the legal framework of support to kinship families including the scope and eligibility of ASGSF
Considered principles of good practice around assessments of support needs and support planning
Reflected on ways to encourage positive engagement with therapeutic interventions
Explored different therapeutic approaches most commonly used in ASGSF funded support packages
Reflected on what to consider when matching the family needs to the ‘right’ therapy and how this looks in practice
Looked at different outcome measurements of therapeutic interventions as required by ASGSF

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This training is aimed at social workers, support workers, and social work managers who work with kinship families. It may also be useful for special guardians.
