Learning from Research: Attachment theory - new developments and perspectives

Attachment is among the core theories for social work with children and families. Yet there remain considerable debates about what practitioners need to know about attachment, in part because outdated ideas about attachment still hold considerable power. In this webinar, we draw on a consultation with the international attachment research community to propose an updating of the curriculum, incorporating the key consensus findings of contemporary research. This includes the implications for a child's development of their various attachment relationships, and the impact of poverty and socioeconomic stressors on caregiving and attachment.

SPEAKERS

Sarah Foster is Assistant Professor in Social Work at Northumbria University. She has been teaching on pre and post qualifying social work programmes since 2014, and her doctoral research explored how attachment theory is understood and used by social workers in child welfare assessment practice.

Robbie Duschinsky is Head of the Applied Social Sciences Group at Cambridge University. His books include Sustaining Social Work (Palgrave) and Cornerstones of Attachment Research (Oxford), which is free to download.
