CoramBAAF Webinar

Exploring Expertise: Kinship Care Support

THEME

This session will explore ‘what can effective kinship support should look like’ in the context of statutory social work provision. There is a postcode lottery for kinship families in what support is available to them, and the significant needs of kinship families were highlighted in the recent Independent Review of Children’s Social Care. But there is also evidence of existing good and promising practice, where local authorities have developed services to ensure kinship carers do receive targeted and bespoke support.

This session will explore what key elements can contribute to effective kinship support, and how some local authorities deliver this.

PRESENTERS

We will hear from various speakers to explore this subject. Mike Hall, Independent Kinship Consultant, completed work commissioned by the ASGLB to identify ‘Key Elements of a Special Guardianship Support Service’ and will share this ‘blueprint’ for what is effectively a service specification based on some exempla support services. We will also hear a recorded interview with a kinship carer who had a positive experience of the support she received from her local kinship care team. And finally we will then hear from 3 different local authorities, who will share their models of support for kinship carers.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The session is aimed at social work practitioners, managers, supervising social workers, children’s social workers, panel chairs and other professionals.

For social workers, reflection on this session may contribute to your continuing professional development (CPD).
