Exploring Expertise: The ICO’s “Better Records Together” Campaign and Research on Improving Access to Care Records
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) Better Records Together campaign responds to evidence that many care-experienced people face significant barriers when trying to access their care records, including long delays, poor communication, and excessive or unexplained redactions. The campaign emphasises the importance of person-centred, trauma-informed approaches that recognise the role care records play in helping people understand their identity, life history and experiences in care.
Drawing on the ICO’s new care records standards and research with care-experienced people, the session will explore how organisations can improve the way records are created, managed and shared. It will highlight practical steps for practitioners and organisations to support lawful, compassionate and transparent access to records, while meeting data protection obligations. It will also explore how better record-keeping practices can improve outcomes for children and adults with care experience.
