Access to children’s social care files

THEME

All young people who are either care experienced or had social workers involved in their childhood, have the right to access the information that is written about them and saved on their files. we examine these legal rights and the various legal frameworks that govern the processes around accessing care files. We consider best practice in supporting young people to access their care files, as well as consider the psychological and emotional benefits.

By the end of the session participants will have had the opportunity to

•    Learnt from recent research findings on practice in supporting care experienced young adults to access their care files
•    Considered best practice in supporting care experienced young people to access their care files
•    Reflected on the emotional support and containment needed to enable care experienced adults to access their care files 

PRESENTER

 

Jo Woolf, Associate Trainer, CoramBAAF.

Jo has been working with children and families for over 25 years, in local authority and community nurseries, as a social worker, as a psychotherapist and as a trainer/ consultant. She delivers training around the country and internationally to staff in local authorities, voluntary organisations, governments and for foster carers and adopters.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Any social workers supporting foster carers, adopters or kinship carers who’s young people in their care wish to access their care files. Any looked after child nurses or other health professionals who may be supporting care experienced young people who wish to access their care files.
