THEME

The session will focus on a strengths-based approach to inform how social workers work with young people. A strengths-based approach relies on articulating qualities to celebrate and nurture as well as to support needs. This session will provide an opportunity for those working in the children and families sector to consider how we communicate in our practice. We will also be sharing the top tips for aspirational and ambitious practice that empowers the young people we have the privilege to work with.

Rebekah Pierre, Care-experienced author, social worker and campaigner

Rebekah Pierre is a care-experienced author, social worker and campaigner & Emma Fincham is a social worker and fostering consultant. In this workshop they will explore how thinking, speaking and writing about young people directly impacts on increasing or decreasing their opportunities, their choices and decisions available to them.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The session is aimed at foster carers, adopters, children’s services, social workers, supervising social workers, managers and anyone interested in understanding how writing about young people can impact their journey through care and life. This session aims to focus on a strengths-based approach to communication in practice.

For social workers, reflection on this session may contribute to your continuing professional development (CPD).

MEMBERS' WEEK

For many years we held an annual members' day to give our members, our staff and invited speakers the opportunity to share views on the most pressing issues facing family placement services.  

Last year, we devoted a whole week to member engagement activities and it was such a success we decided to do it again! Over the course of the week, we will explore key topics and best practices that mirror the journey of children and young people through the care system. The theme for this year's Members' Week is taken from our publication, A child’s journey through placement.
