Exploring Expertise: Building the evidence and responding to the issues of recurrent care proceedings
THEME
Professionals working across the family justice system have long been aware that mothers and fathers experiencing repeat involvement in care proceedings is routine rather than exceptional. Although this issue now commonly referred to as ‘recurrent care proceedings’ - was well known at local practice level, prior to 2012 it had been given little attention in national policy or practice.
Over the last ten years our understanding of the prevalence of recurrent care proceedings has been hugely advanced by the ground breaking data analysis work of the Centre for Child and Family Justice at Lancaster University, view details here.
Alongside this, their qualitative work with mothers and more recently fathers who have experienced recurrent care proceedings offers rich insights into the experience of child protection and public family law and its impact, view details here.
Since 2020, Research in Practice and Centre for Child and Family Justice at Lancaster University, co-funded by the Segelman Trust, have been convening and facilitating a Community of Practice for the growing number of specialist services working with these parents.
This session will share some of the learning from the research studies and the Community of Practice.
For social workers, reflection on this session may contribute to your continuing professional development (CPD).
