Learning from Research Webinar: Watch Me Play!

The webinar will explore the basics of the Watch Me Play! model which has been developed by Dr Jenifer Wakelyn, Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist and colleagues at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust over many years. The model explores the advantages that result from regular sessions of play for babies and young children in care or those who have left care. An outline of the model, leaflets and a manual can be accessed here.  

One of the basics of childhood is play - engaging with toys and creative materials, other children and/or adults in telling a story that expresses a range of emotions and behaviour through a narrative that is driven by both experience, imagination and relationships. Speech and language will come to play an important part in this as the child grows older.

For carers, enabling and participating in regular playtime creates a significant opportunity for the child to develop ways of engaging with and communicating about themselves and the world around them. This can create a sense of who the child is – what is important to them, what they feel excited about, how they see a problem being resolved, what creates anxiety or upset and what they struggle with. Watch a child play and you see and experience the best of who the child is. The challenge is incorporating child-led play into daily routines - the significant advantages that can come from doing so are the focus of this webinar. The webinar will explore the basics of the model and create a significant opportunity to begin and develop what can be learnt and gained from the ‘Watch Me Play!’ model.
