Acknowledging difference is essential to our work with children and their families. On this course you will have key questions answered such as ‘What is neurodiversity?’ and ‘How can we work more effectively with neurodivergent children and young people?’ The course will explore the importance of understanding neurodiversity as a natural variation to ‘the norm’ rather than as something that is disordered, dysfunctional or deficient.

We will also consider the positive impact neurodiversity can have in fostering adoptive, and kinship families.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, participants will have:

  • Developed an understanding of neurodiversity
  • Understood some of the needs of neurodivergent children and young people
  • Increased confidence to take steps in becoming more knowledgeable, skilled and inclusive when working with neurodiversity

Who should attend?

  • Any social workers or managers working with children and families

“Very useful course, thank you. I have taken from this training further awareness and empathy for children who are neurodivergent especially in supporting foster carers in formal supervision visits to help carers also be more emphatic and not feel the need to 'fix'. “
