Undertaking a kinship assessment (two day course)
THEME
This course is an opportunity to explore the unique context of kinship care and assessment of prospective kinship carers. Participants will explore professional and personal values and gain knowledge of what constitutes a robust kinship assessment within the legal and regulatory framework. The course will consider different assessment tools that can be used in kinship assessment practice, triangulation of information and effective support planning.
There will be the opportunity to discuss examples of assessments and support plans alongside case studies. The course will provide an introduction to CoramBAAF’s Kinship Care Assessment (Form K) but will be relevant if a different template assessment is used.
LEARNING OUTCOME
- Explore personal and professional values relating to kinship care
- Considered the context of kinship care assessment practice, including the legal and regulatory framework
- Explore care planning for children within their family networks, including an understanding of the role of fostering panel and court
- Consider how to amplify the child’s voice and the meaning of the pre-existing relationship with the prospective kinship carer
- Explore different tools to enable robust and authoritative assessment
- Reflect on what makes good analysis
- Consider how to meet support needs through effective planning
- Have an introduction to CoramBAAF’s Kinship Care Assessment (Form K)

Social workers and managers who are new to kinship assessment or want a refresher on how to undertake good kinship assessments.
