The AFDiT Framework: Briefing session
A child’s identity is significantly shaped by their experiences within their birth family. Adopted children and adults have complex and lifelong identity needs, further complicated if they are transracially adopted. AFDiT is an anti-racist practice tool that supports social workers and family finders in effectively understanding, addressing and protecting the identity need of racialised and minoritised ethnic children; especially when moving into adoptive families. It is, however, a tool that should also be used for self-reflection and team work. It equally applies to transracial foster homes. The Framework was developed by a team at the University of Sussex and was co-created with a team of professionals and people with lived experience of transracial adoption.
In this short briefing, we are lucky to be joined by Dr Tam Cane who will be talking us through the research and development of the AFDit framework. We also be discussing how this groundbreaking publication has been embedded into CoramBAAF’s updated Child Permanence Report (CPR) England form and what that means for social workers and their practice.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
- How identity shapes the adoption experience for transracially placed children
- Practical ways to apply the AFDit framework in adoption practice
- How the AFDit Framework.is embedded in the updated Child’s Permanence Report
PRESENTERS
Dr Tam Cane, Senior Lecturer, University of Sussex
Dr Tam Cane is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sussex. Dr Tam Cane's research interests centre around HIV reproductive health and adoption. Over the past few years, she has researched and published peer-reviewed articles around HIV-related reproductive health, adoption, problematic and unhealthy alcohol misuse and contextual safeguarding.
WHO'S IT FOR?
Everyone beginning to familiarise themselves with the AFDiT framework and all the evidence and resources it encompasses needs to be willing to be intellectually and emotionally stretched. Whether you are a prospective adopter, foster carer, social worker, policymaker or academic we invite you to engage with the framework both personally and professionally. In fact we would go so far as to say that in order to engage meaningfully such a form of engagement is unavoidable, as AFDiT is about how we ALL are and how we then behave in the context of transracial adoption.
