National Adoption Week: The adoption journey

  • Date:

This National Adoption Week (21- 28 October), we are shining a spotlight on the diverse and unique journeys of adoptive families through You Can Adopt’s campaign, The Journey.

The theme aims to raise awareness about modern adoption and highlight the variety of types of family  that exist today. According to new data, commissioned for National Adoption Week, 65% of Brits believe there is no such thing as a ‘normal’ family, whilst 42%  claim to come from a ‘non-traditional’ family structure. This data underscores the evolving nature of what it means to be a family.

You can also watch new video interviews with adopters and adoptees, listen to podcast episodes and scroll through photos and quotes that explore the adoption journey that have been created by You Can Adopt for National Adoption Week on their website

At CoramBAAF, we have created and collated a range of resources that reflect on the adoption journey – from personal experiences to professional practice, to encouraging individuals and families to come forward to become adopters. We will be updating our National Adoption Week webpage with new information and resources throughout the week.

Join our webinar

It’s your last chance to sign up to our National Adoption Week webinar! We will be joined by The Black Adoption Project later today (22 October) at 11.30am - 1pm via Zoom to explore the complex factors affecting adoption within the Black communities. They will help us think about what it means to move beyond short-term solutions to develop a deeper understanding and response to adoption. This event is free for members!

CoramBAAF Conversations

Our podcast series, CoramBAAF Conversations, is dedicated to exploring topics related to adoption, fostering, and kinship care. We invite children’s social care professionals and experts by experience to share their knowledge, best practices, and personal stories.

  • Al Coates tells us about his family’s motivations to adopt and what it is like being a father, adopter and foster carer
  • Dr Tam Cane shares insights on the process of developing the AFDiT framework with her team and how it can be implemented in practice

We hope these resources and events will support you in your work, as well as help to encourage more individuals and families to take the first steps to becoming adopters.
