THEME

In this session Paul Shuttleworth will be discussing why children's views are worthy of inclusion in research and shaping policy and practice in kinship care. Paul will discuss his research, the first that solely listens to children's insights about emotional permanence. The research also champions a new ‘what matters’ approach. This can be used in further research as well as in practice and everyday family life.

The children's views evoke themes of the fuzziness of family, a sense of permanence, maintaining connections in ways other than just relying on 'contact', the different types of recognition children desire, feeling safe, feeling appropriately included, and the importance of managing tricky ambivalent relationships.  Overall, the children show the importance of discussing values, rather than taking a tick-box approach to kinship care.

Paul will also briefly talk about subsequent work, including how the assumptions we make about kinship care, may be leading us down the wrong path.

PRESENTER

Dr Paul Shuttleworth is an ESRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Sussex University. Having completed his PhD in 2021 on ‘What Matters To Children Living In Kinship Care’, Paul worked as a BASW Professional Officer, an Associate Tutor for the University of Sussex, and completed publications for journals and edited books. Paul, his research, and his innovative child-centred 'what matters' methodology have been featured on various podcasts. He also co-hosts the podcast 'Sarah and Paul Do Do Social Work'. Paul co-created and currently chairs the first UK Jewish Social Worker Group. His research interests include child participation, kinship care, permanence, dialogical participation, critical realism, value-led research and practice, and breaking down the theory-practice divide.

For social workers, reflection on this session may contribute to your continuing professional development (CPD).
