THEME

Creative Life Story Work is a new approach to helping care-experienced children and young people understand their own life stories.

The approach is led by Blue Cabin, a North East of England -based charity which transforms outcomes for care-experienced children and young people, and is based on the Rose model of Therapeutic Life Story Work.

Between 2020 and 2021, Creative Life Story Work was rolled out in three local authorities in the North East of England: Gateshead, Darlington and South Tyneside, with funding from What Works Centre for Social Care.

Evaluation of Creative Life Story Work by Coram-i and Ipsos Mori found that:

  • 85% of local authority staff who responded to a survey thought that Creative Life Story Work is more effective than traditional life story work
  • A better understanding of care experience and identity were most often cited among the benefits to care-experienced children and young people of Creative Life Story Work
  • Of those involved in delivery of Creative Life Story Work, there was generally a perception it had improved the relationships between carers and children and young people, and improved well-being and stability of placements
  • In interviews, no negative effects of taking part were reported, and carers and children and young people recommended the programme.

The study was supported by a co-production project which recruited 12 care-experienced young people in the three local authorities to provide input into evaluation tools and reporting.

This session discusses the results and implications of this research.

LEARNING OUTCOME

Participants will hear the results and implications of a research project that took place over a year into Creative Life Story Work.

Jenny Young will share information about what an All About Me Creative Experience involves and what learning took place between the three local authorities.

PRESENTER

Jenny Young, Director, Blue Cabin

Jenny Young founded Blue Cabin in 2016 – this has been one of her greatest achievements. Jenny has 20 years of experience working in both local authority and cultural sectors, with extensive knowledge and interest in care-experienced communities. Blue Cabin nurtures meaningful relationships between care experienced individuals, and the people and organisations who are part of their lives. It achieves this through trauma informed, artist-led creative programmes.

Emily Blackshaw, Lead Quantitative Analyst, is an experienced mixed methods researcher, specialising in quantitative methods. In her role at Coram, Emily leads on quantitative data analysis across a portfolio of internal and external projects. Emily has a particular interest in youth mental health and psychosocial models of distress.

Before joining Coram, Emily worked in the Business Development Team at Mind whilst completing her PhD on the psychometric properties of the YP-CORE measurement tool. Prior to this, Emily worked on three projects at King’s College London - a feasibility randomised controlled trial for an intervention for depression and anxiety in older adolescents, an evaluation of a community-based group intervention supporting parents with young children, and a study exploring the communication of paediatric cardiac surgery survival rates to the public. Emily’s research publications include contributions to Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Health Services and Delivery Research.
