This series of introductory booklets aims to provide information for foster carers and residential care workers who are, or who will be, looking after unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people from certain countries - Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iraq, Sudan and Vietnam.

In the year ending March 23, according to the Department of Education data, there were 7290 unaccompanied-asylum seeking children and young people in care. We know there are more who are illegally placed in hotels or incorrectly age-assessed as adults. Many of these children and young people are vulnerable and experiencing discrimination. In this open course, we will explore their legal rights, think about their needs, how these can best be met and with what support.

The introductory booklet provides information for foster carers and residential care workers who are, or who will be, looking after unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people. It explores who these young people are, where they come from, what their journeys may have been like, what their specific needs are now, and how carers can help and support them.

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking and refugee children have survived the consequences of conflict and persecution – trauma, injury, pain, loss and separation. Once in the UK, local authorities have a duty to look after these vulnerable children to the same standards as any other looked after child, with an increasing number in foster care. Foster carers need formal training to give them additional understanding and skills to add to their existing experience and commitment. This training course provides a comprehensive introduction to the issues.
