CoramBAAF Open Course

An Introduction to the Secure Base Model

THEME

The Secure Base Model devised by Gillian Schofield and Mary Beek (UEA) focuses on the interactions that occur between caregivers and children, through the provision of a positive framework for therapeutic caregiving, which helps infants, children and young people to move towards greater security and builds resilience.

With children firmly in focus, this open course provides an introduction to the Secure Base Model framework and specific related tools which enable practitioners to assess prospective foster carers’ and adopters’ parenting capacities and on-going support needs.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • To provide a framework for considering the skills and capacities associated with offering therapeutic care as part of family life in foster care and adoption
  • To develop critical thinking and reflective practice in the completion of fostering, adoption and assessments relating to parenting capacity and support provision
  • To consider the application of Secure Base resources and tools to specific practice areas

Promoting Attachment and Resilience

Authors: Gillian Schofield and Mary Beek (2014)Book - Promoting Attachment and resilience (2014)

All children need to feel secure in their relationships with the adults who look after them. Where children have not experienced the kind of sensitive parenting that promotes security and resilience, they will find it difficult to trust and will struggle with managing their feelings and behaviour.

This practical guide is designed to support foster carers and adopters in offering the best possible sensitive care for troubled children who have often experienced trauma and loss. Secure Base is a model of caregiving in fostering and adoption that is based on theories of attachment and resilience while also drawing on child placement research. Providing a secure base is at the heart of successful family relationships. It provides a valuable framework and strength-based approach for making sense of fostered and adopted children’s needs and behaviours and sets out the dimensions of caregiving that can support children to thrive and to fulfil their potential.
