Who is an Expert by Experience?

We define an Expert by Experience (EbE) as someone who has lived experience of the children’s social care system, whether current or past, through:

  • Interaction with a social worker as a child
  • Personal experience in care
  • Being a family member of a child who has interacted with a social worker
  • Being a family member of a child who has been in care

This might mean that they are care-experienced themselves, are related to someone who is, or are a birth parent with experience of social care.

The Experts by Experience we work with will be 18 years or older and will each have a unique and personal set of circumstances and experiences, which we are mindful of.  An Expert by Experience will represent their own lived experience, however, this may provide insights into the experiences of others. They do not need to be employed in a professional capacity or hold a policy position within an organisation to work with us as an EbE.

Work with us

We provide opportunities for Experts by Experience to access and participate in our work – for example as a speaker at an event, a blogger, or an author of a book. We seek to remove barriers and support Experts by Experience to ensure that a diverse range of experiences and voices are reflected in our work.

Support

We are conscious that Experts by Experience give their time and share their personal stories to aid and support policy and practice, improving the lives of children and families. Some may face additional costs, such as arranging childcare or not partaking in paid employment to support our work. We also acknowledge that there can be an emotional toll in taking part in discussions, which may be reminders of challenges in the past or present.

We support Experts by Experience financially for their contribution and involvement with our work. CoramBAAF staff will be available to work with them to offer assistance and advice.
