This half-day training is aimed at local authority professionals who are involved in the placement of children currently living with kinship carers in the UK; being placed overseas with kinship carers. It will provide an overview of the available research and Outbound data for children being placed abroad. There will then be ample time to discuss issues regarding viability and support plans for overseas cases during case studies and group discussion.

In this session Paul Shuttleworth will be discussing why children's views are worthy of inclusion in research and shaping policy and practice in kinship care. Paul will discuss his research, the first that solely listens to children's insights about emotional permanence. The research also champions a new ‘what matters’ approach. This can be used in further research as well as in practice and everyday family life.

This research study describes the setting up of the first rigorous test in the UK to look at the efficacy of particular kinds of adoption support. It aimed to discover whether the addition of one-on-one parenting advice sessions made a difference compared with a comparison group receiving routine support services.

Ruth Copson will share findings from her doctoral research which explores how Family Time/contact for infants in Early Permanence placements is managed and experienced by those closely involved. The perspectives of birth parents, Early Permanence carers and practitioners will be shared with reflections on how infants respond to Family Time.

In many situations, the reality of the placement becoming unlawful speaks more to the limitations of the regulations themselves, than whether the placement is the best place for a child to live. In an effort to help practitioners navigate these challenges, we have published the following a practice note.
