When Daisy met Tommy

£8.95

Published as part of the Our Story series, this is the story of how Daisy and her parents adopted Tom. Although written by her mother, it is really six-year-old Daisy’s adoption story. In this humorous and poignant account, Daisy’s thoughts and feelings about the family’s decision to adoption Tom and her perspective on the adoption process are brought vividly to life.

Honest and accessible, When Daisy met Tommy charts the joys and frustrations of the adoption process for Daisy and her parents’ determination to protect their daughter from what at times seems a testing, yet ultimately rewarding journey.

Who is this book for?

Anyone who is interested in the adoption experience and how this feels for the people involved.

What you will find in this book

‘Cue to the chat with Daisy. More of a fluffy chicks and buzzy bumblebees type of chat, suitable for four-year-olds…to show how, although all babies grow inside their mummy’s tummy, not all the mummies are able to look after their children. ‘Why?’ was the inevitable question.

‘Because…’I started thinking of all the material I had read, of the statistics, the facts and heart-wrenchingly gritty stories, ‘because they might be too poorly or unhappy,’ I continued, watching her every movement. Daisy played coyly on the lounge floor, a question clearly forming.

‘These children need new mummies and daddies.’ I paused, wondering what her reaction, so absolutely crucial to us, would be. ‘And most definitely new bossy big sisters,’ I added. I saw her eyes flicker in recognition.

‘Daddy and I were thinking that maybe we should give one of those children a home. That maybe we could be their new mummy and daddy and that you could be their big sister.’

Daisy was still preoccupied with the startling fact that there were children out there without parents. When she realised we could do something about it, she turned round, matter of fact, and said: ‘That’s what we must do then,’ quite obviously incredulous that we hadn’t thought of it sooner.

Reviews

I loved it. I cried a lot through it though, so have the tissues ready. This is written really well by an adoptive mum who seems like WonderMum to me, and I picked up lots of good tips from her. If I can be half the mum she is, I’ll be happy. Don’t worry about the age of Tommy, this book can be related to children of all ages.

Five stars, Amazon review

Great book about adoption – written with love and amazing language. Highly recommended for those adopting and anyone else.
