Kinship care is any situation in which a child is being raised in the care of a friend or family member who is not their parent for a significant amount of the time. The arrangement may be temporary or longer term. These arrangements can include: 

  • an informal kinship care arrangement, 
  • a private fostering arrangement, 
  • child arrangements order, 
  • special guardianship order, 
  • ‘Looked After Child’ with kinship foster carer, 
  • or adoption order.

Private fostering

Private fostering is a private arrangement made between a parent and a responsible adult for the care of a child under the age of 16 (under 18 if disabled). The person who will be looking after the child is not a parent or close relative of the child, and the arrangement is planned to last for at least 28 days.
